Testing Groups

There are two different tests, which we are comparing against the current strategy (usual care group).

  • Lab Based Test at 3-5 weeks before anticipated delivery date (Enriched Culture Medium Testing)
  • Bedside Test at start of labour (Intrapartum Rapid Testing)

For more information on what this involves see information below:

Lab Based Test at 3-5 weeks before anticipated delivery date

If your hospital has been allocated to the lab based test at 3-5 weeks before anticipated delivery date:

This test involves a swab to be taken from both your vagina and rectum (back passage) when you are approximately 35-37 weeks pregnant. This can be taken by a health care professional or you can do it yourself. The procedure will not hurt but it may be slightly uncomfortable. The swab will be sent to your hospital laboratory for testing and you will be informed if the test is positive.

If the result is positive for group B Strep, you will be offered antibiotics as soon as possible once your labour has started.

Bedside Test at start of labour

If your hospital has been allocated to the bedside test at start of labour:

This test requires a swab to be taken from both your vagina and rectum (back passage) when you are in labour. The procedure will not hurt but it may be slightly uncomfortable. The swab will be immediately put into a machine by a member of your care team and the results will be available within one hour.

If the result is positive for group B Strep, you will be offered antibiotics immediately.

Usual Care Group

If your hospital has been allocated to the usual care group:

No additional procedures (outside of your usual care) will be undertaken. You will be treated for group B Strep in accordance with your local hospital policy and the current UK strategy.
